The 1973 production of Desert Song is a second revival of the original 1926 musical which premiered at the Casino Theatre in New York City. Opening nearly fifty years after its original production, Lehman Engel's Desert Song tells the story of a French General who has been sent to Morocco to weed out and destroy the notorious Riffs, a group of Arabian rebels captained by a mysterious leader called "Red Shadow," who have attacked the French-Moroccan outpost in the desert. David Cryer (b.1936) is an American stage, film and television actor who has appeared in 19 films and T.V. shows, including Law and Order (1991) and American Gigolo (1980), and 10 Broadway shows, including The Phantom of the Opera (1988). John Ribecchi played Sid El Kar, Red Shadow's Arab lieutenant in the musical. Mandingo Shaka, who performed in the play Lost in the Stars (1972), was cast as Herri, one of the lead Riffs. Stage, film and television actress Chris Callan (b.1944) has performed in seven plays, including Prince of Central Park (1989), as well as over a dozen television shows such as One Life to Live (1976). David Vogel, who appeared in the musicals Make a Wish (1951) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949-1951), mainly worked as an understudy and a vocalist on stage.
