DeWITT WALLACE and LILA ACHESON WALLACE. Photograph signed:
"Lila Acheson Wallace" and "DeWitt Wallace". B/w with sepia
hue, 10x8. DeWITT WALLACE (1889-1981) spent four months in a French
hospital after being wounded at the Battle of Verdun during WWI. To pass the
time, he read American magazines, and when Wallace returned to the U.S. he began
researching and condensing magazine articles. He showed his sample
magazine of condensed articles to LILA BELL ACHESON (1890-1984), who
was enthusiastic over his idea. The couple, who married in 1921, decided
to publish the new magazine, known as "The Reader's Digest", themselves
and market it through direct mail. The magazine, which debuted on February 5,
1922, would become one of the most widely circulated periodicals in the
world. DeWitt was also known for his philanthropies, which included
large bequests to his alma mater, Macalester College in Minnesota. Lightly
creased and soiled at blank margins and corners. Minor surface creases and
stains (most not evident head on). Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso, which
is lightly soiled and shaded (no show through). Overall, fine
condition.
