DHAN GOPAL MUKERJI (1890-1936) was an Indian intellect and author who studied in the United States, Scotland, and Japan, hoping to spread the culture and ideas of India to the Western world. Graduating from Standford with a metaphysics degree, Mukerji began writing prolifically in the 1920's while in New York, publishing works (mostly children's books) like Kari the Elephant and the Newberry Medal winning Gay Neck, the Story of a Pigeon. Many of his books, including his adult novels, drew upon his life in India and brought an unseen world to foreign audiences. However, Mukerji struggled with inner conflict and homesickness, and committed suicide shortly after his 46th birthday. Poet KATHERINE GARRISON CHAPIN (1890-1977) published verses in popular American magazines, including Harper's, Scribner'sand Ladies Home Journal from 1926. At least 10 collections of her poems were published between 1925 and 1975, the last beingThe Chinese Deer. Some of her poems were set to music, performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. An early campaigner against racial segregation and McCarthyism, she was married to US Attorney and chief Nuremberg judge General Francis Biddle. LYSBETH BOYD BORIE (1903-1990) was a poet, publishing Poems for Peter in 1928. EDWARD SCULLEY BRADLEY was an author, publishing several biographies and collections, focusing in particular on author Walt Whitman. FRANK H. LAHEY (1880-1953) was a Boston based surgeon and doctor, known for his specialization in the thyroid, the biliary tract, and the gastrointestinal tract. He founded the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in 1923, which still operates today as one of the best hospitals in urology. Binding holes on left margin. Light surface creases. Lightly toned.
