DIAHANN CARROLL
Diahann Carroll signs a note to television personality George
Sanders.
Autograph Note signed: "To George/Thank you/Diahann/Carroll",
5¼x8 album leaf. Ink caption (unknown hand) at bottom. Unsigned newspaper
photo of actress Cloris Leachman (b/w, 2½x4) on verso. The first Black woman
to star in her own TV sitcom (Julia, 1968-1971), Carroll won a
scholarship to study at the Metropolitan Opera at the age of ten. In 1954 she
debuted on Broadway in House of Flowers and starred in an all-Black film
adaptation of Carmen. Over her 40-year career, Carroll has won a Tony
Award (No Strings, 1962) and an Emmy and Golden Globe for Julia;
she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for Claudine (1974) and for a
second Emmy for her guest role on A Different World (1989). She had a
recurring role in Dynasty (1984-1987). In addition to breaking color
barriers in entertainment, Carroll was the first Black woman to launch her
own clothing line (1997). Slightly frayed left edge where page was removed from
a book. George R. Sanders, originally a disc jockey, became a prominent
radio/TV interview host, first in Los Angeles and later in Portland. Newspaper
photo on verso shows through lightly at signature. Otherwise, fine
condition.
