Standard AFTRA contract for a single TV engagement, a program titled On
Broadway Tonight, originally airing scheduled for 1965 January 8. Carroll is
hired as a guest performer for $7,500, which includes her compensation for 18
hours of rehearsal. The first Black woman to star in her own TV sitcom
(Julia, 1968-1971), Carroll won a scholarship to study at the
Metropolitan Opera at the age of ten. In 1954 she debuted on Broadway in
House of Flowers and starred in an all-Black film adaptation of
Carmen. Over her 40-year career, Carroll has won a Tony Award (No
Strings, 1962) and an Emmy and Golden Globe for Julia; she was
nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for Claudine (1974) and for a second
Emmy for her guest role on A Different World (1989). She had a recurring
role in Dynasty (1984-1987). In addition to breaking color barriers in
entertainment, Carroll was the first Black woman to launch her own clothing
