DIANA SERRA "BABY PEGGY" CARY
Card signed with her screen name and married name in 1978
Signature: "11-26-78/Baby Peggy/Diana Serra Cary", 5x3 card. Born Margaret Montgomery in 1918, the actress/author made Hollywood history when she made her first two-reel comedy at the age of 19 months under the name of "Baby Peggy". Hollywood's pioneer -- and youngest -- child star would appear in some 150 slapstick comedies and nine feature films, beginning with The Darling of New York in 1923. Later a seven-year-old headliner on the dying vaudeville circuit, Montgomery tried to make a comeback at the age of 21 as Peggy Montgomery (a name that was used by the popular Western star). She then left Hollywood to become a historian and author, writing books under the name Diana Serra Cary (Cary was the name of her second husband). Her books on early Hollywood include Hollywood Posse and Hollywood's Children, and she also published her autobiography, Whatever Happened to Baby Peggy? in 1996. As Cary retells it, her years as a child star were unhappy ones, and her parents squandered her substantial earnings. Fine condition.
