Dick Gregory (1932-2017) gained fame as a stand-up comic in the early 1960s, noted for his sharp-edged humor on racial issues. Critical of the Vietnam War, Gregory ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Chicago in 1966 and as a write-in candidate for President in 1968. His Presidential campaign netted 1.5 million votes, three times the number by which Richard Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey. A vegetarian, he also markets nutritional and weight loss supplements. He has released 15 record albums and 15 books to date. Gregory, always a strong campaigner for human and animal rights, is also associated with controversial theories concerning the assassinations of JFK and Martin Luther King, the moon landings, the spread of AIDS, 9/11, and many others.
