DICK GREGORY
Signed flyer from a SNCC "Freedom Rally" which he was scheduled to address
Flyer signed: "To you from/me/Dick Gregory", 1 page, 7x9¼. Flyer for a "Freedom Rally" sponsored by SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), featuring Dick Gregory and the SNCC Freedom Singers. No place or date, but conservative dress of the demonstrators pictures suggests early 1960s. Dick Gregory (1932-2017) gained fame as a stand-up comic in the early 1960s, noted for his sharp-edged humor on racial issues. Critical of the Vietnam War, Gregory ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Chicago in 1966, and as a write-in candidate for President in 1968. His Presidential campaign netted 1.5 million votes, three times the number by which Richard Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey. A vegetarian, he also markets nutritional and weight loss supplements. He has released 15 record albums and 15 books to date. Gregory, always a strong campaigner for human and animal rights, is also associated with controversial theories concerning the assassinations of JFK and Martin Luther King, the moon landings, the spread of AIDS, and 9/11, among others. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was formed in 1960 to promote the cause of civil rights, playing a major role in mobilizing support for the 1963 March on Washington. As the decade progressed the group adopted other causes, opposition to the Vietnam War and especially the "black power" movement. Left edge frayed from binding. Lightly soiled. Adhesive residue on verso. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
