DICK GREGORY. Book inscribed and signed: "To: Lou from/Dick Gregory", 213p, 5½x8, hardcover. His book, The Shadow That Scares Me, Edited by James R. McGraw. Doubleday & Company, Inc., New York: 1968. First Edition. From the jacket notes: "With sensitivity and perception and a deep conviction, Dick Gregory offers in this book bitingly satiric comments and criticisms of Negro as well as white attitudes toward the problem of civil rights. 'There is a great social revolution going on in America today', he declares. 'And the wonderful thing about this revolution is that it is not black against white. It is simply right against wrong.'" Gregory, who gained national fame as a stand-up comedian in 1961 with his satirical views on American racial attitudes, began his professional career in 1958, at the age of 26, in Chicago nightclubs. During the 1960s, Gregory became active in the Civil Rights movement and, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, became an outspoken critic of U.S. military action in Southeast Asia. Gregory ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Chicago in 1966, and, at the Peace and Freedom Party Convention, held August 18, 1968, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, came in second to Eldridge Cleaver for the presidential nomination. Gregory later became the Freedom and Peace Party candidate for Vice President. In original dust jacket. Book jacket lightly soiled, else fine condition.
