DICK HAYMES
Get well card, consoling "Leon" for catching the clap. "Cheer up! It happens in the best of families!" Signed by him for himself and his wife Wendy
Greeting Card signed: "Wendy&/Dick Haymes" [signed for both by him], 7x8½ opened flat. Get well card with printed message, "I don't care what the Doctor said - You feel great!" His handwritten message in full: "Dear Leon - We hear you got the clap!! Cheer up. It happens in the best of families! Love [signature] P.S. I'm home now." Dick Haymes (1918-1980), born in Argentina, was a very popular big band singer of the 1940s and solo pop vocalist through the mid- 1950s. He sang with the bands of Harry James, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, and was renowned for his mellow renditions of pop standards like "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "It Might as Well Be Spring." He appeared in a few films (State Fair, Four Jills and a Jeep), and might have been remained at the top had it not been for personal problems: alcohol, women (six stormy marriages, including one to Rita Hayworth), and citizenship problems. His sixth marriage (to Wendy Smith in 1968) lasted until his death. (Columbia Pictures mogul Harry Cohn tried to get him deported.) Stray ink mark on face of card. Upper right corner creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
