offensive of the war was halted.
Typescript signed: "Dick O'Brien", 1 page, 8½x11. Typescript
titled "Battle of the Bulge: Fifty years later, Battle of the Bulge survivor
recalls when war was icy Hell". Four paragraphs by Dick O'Brien, a Sergeant in H
Company, 137 Infantry, 35th Division, General Patton's Third Army. The
Ardennes Offensive as December 1944- January 1945, better known to Americans as
the Battle of the Bulge, was Hitler's last effort to reverse the tide of battle
on the Western front. It became the largest land battle every fought by the US
Army. The 35th Infantry Division, which had fought across France with
General George Patton's Third Army, was part of Patton's counter-attack on
the southern flank of the German salient, ultimately successful in relieving
the besieged defenders of Bastogne and destroying the elite Adolf Hitler
Division in the process, but sustaining heavy casualties. Dick O'Brien is the
historian of the 35th Infantry Division Association. His full commentary on
the battle, and on the Division's other campaigns, can be found on the
Association's website. His well-written narrative, obviously reflecting both
personal experience and detailed research, includes no biography of the author.
