Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Franklin/Lots of very good/wishes/Dick Powell".
B/w, 10½x13½. DICK POWELL (1903-1963) sang and played several instruments in live
performance and radio in the late 1920s, and had some hit records. He moved to film
musicals in the 1930s, including 42nd Street (1933) and The Gold Diggers of 1933 and
subsequent years. He moved to dramatic roles in the following decade, beginning by
playing Phillip Marlow in Murder, My Sweet (1944). He appeared often on early TV,
hosting The Dick Powell Show from 1961 until his early death from cancer. Powell was
married to actresses Joan Blondell and June Allyson. Although not inscribed to A. M.
"Doc" Salomon, this photo was part of his collection.Salomon, a friend of studio mogul Jack
Warner who rose to head the London branch of Warner Bros. studios, compiled an
extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio.
A V-1 rocket demolished his London studio in July 1944 and killed Salomon, but his photo
collection miraculously survived. Signature light and lightly beaded but legible. Minor notches at
left edge. Lightly toned around edges. Unevenly trimmed. Otherwise, fine condition.
