DICK SHAWN
Black and white publicity photograph of Dick Shawn in his movie The Wizard of Baghdad.
Photograph signed: "D Shawn". B/w, 10x7¾. Still from 1960's The Wizard of Baghdad. Captioned at lower margin by 20th Century Fox. Born Richard Schulefand, Dick Shawn (1923-1987) was a former nightclub comedian who debuted in 1956's The Opposite Sex. He appeared a number of feature films, including Wake Me When It's Over (1961), It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966) and The Producers (1967). The Wizard of Baghdad, Shawn's second film, was a satire of the Arabian Nights. In it, he played Genii-Ali Mahmud, a no-talent genie who is given one last chance to prove himself. Intent on becoming the Wizard of Baghdad, he heads to the city on a talking horse and must fight an evil sultan's plans to prevent a prophesy from coming true. Continuing to do stand-up while appearing in films, Shawn died of a heart attack while performing in San Diego. His live performances were so quirky and unpredictable that the crowd at first assumed that his collapse was part of his act. Upper margin neatly trimmed off. Creased at lower left, with ½" tear at left margin.
