DICK SARGENT
The actor chastises a "fan" who has mistaken him for Dick York, his
predecessor as Darrin Stephens on Bewitched
Typed letter signed: "Sincerely/Dick Sargent", 1p, 8½x11. No
place, 1989 December 31. On parchment-like paper imprinted with his
signature and a b/w photograph to "Dear Ms. Eaton". In full:
"Congratulations on starting to collect autographs with your group of
friends. You flatter me by writing that everyone in the group is a fan of
mine. But being a fan does entail some rules of conduct, such as: never lie
to the celebrity, don't pretend to be a fan, etc.. I receive many letters
that are transparent in their naiveté, such as: 'Dear (and here my name is
filled in with a different ink) You are my favorite star.' Or, 'I have enjoyed
your performances in such things as...' and here they fill in pictures or
television shows that were not seen by human eyes for twenty-five years, and
they are teen-agers. The price of fame is sometimes to be made to feel
totally unknown, strangely enough. Your letter made me feel that way,
since it is obvious that if you were fans, you would know the difference between
Dick York and Dick Sargent. It may not be apparent to you, but it is to me, and,
I'm sure, to him. If you can find an address for him, send him the pictures
you sent mistakenly to me, and I will enclose herein one of me, in spite of the
fact that you don't know who I am. Good luck with your collection."
Photograph not present. In the year he wrote this letter, Sargent appeared in
one feature film, Teen Witch. Screen and television actor Dick
Sargent (1930-1994), born Richard Cox, is best known for his role as the
"second Darrin Stephens" in the TV series, Bewitched. Sargent, who
had been the first choice for the role, had to bow out due to a contract
commitment with Universal, but he took over for an ailing Dick York in
1969, appearing as Darrin until the series' end in 1972. Sargent, who had
made his film debut in 1956, appeared in a number of films, including
Operation Petticoat (1959), The Great Imposter (1961), That
Touch of Mink (1962), Captain Newman, M.D. (1963) and The Ghost
and Mr. Chicken (1966). In addition to Bewitched, Sargent also
starred in several other series, mini-series (including Rich Man, Poor
Man in 1976) and made-for-TV movies in addition to making guest appearances
on a long list of TV shows, from Medic (1956) to Harry and the
Hendersons (1992), including multiple appearances on such shows as Love,
American Style and Charlie's Angels. Slightly creased. Fine
condition.
