Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours sincerely/Digby Bell",
3½x2¼. Vaudeville entertainer Digby Bell (1849-1917) originally studied
in Europe to become a concert singer, but became more popular for his role in
comic operas. His first starring role was in the musical Jupiter
(1892), and more memorable roles would come in the years following,
including J. Wesley Pipp in The Education of Mr. Pipp (1905), Chorus
member in The Yeomen of the Guard (1915), and Dr. Daly in The
Sorcerer (1915). He also made a small number of silent film appearances,
including a film translation of his previous role in The Education of Mr.
Pipp (1914). He was a frequent co-star and close friend to actor
DeWolf Hopper. Heavily toned. Stained from adhesive on top margin. Paper
remnants on verso. Heavily soiled, esp. on bottom margin. Corners slightly worn
and creased. Small tear on right margin. Otherwise, fine
condition.
