DIK BROWNE. Typed Letter signed: "Dik", 1p, 8½x11. New York, N.Y., 1978 April 7. On Hagar the Horrible letterhead to Richard Andrews, Massapequa, New York. In full: "Forgive the delay in answering, we were traveling south when your letter arrived and you know what the snow did to the mail. I'd love to send you a strip but I've donated all of my original work to: The Museum of Cartoon Art, Comly Avenue, Town of Rye - New York 10573. You can purchase an original daily strip for $75.00 and the Sunday strips sell for $150.00. Make your check payable to the Museum of Cartoon Art; it is a non-profit organization and therefore your contribution is tax-deductible. All my best wishes to you and yours for a very happy 1978. Sincerely". Dik Browne (1918-1989) was co-creator with Mort Walker of the comic strip Hi & Lois (1954), a spinoff of Walker's popular Beetle Bailey cartoons. In 1973 Browne, who was still drawing Hi & Lois, began a new strip all his own, writing and drawing Hagar the Horrible, a humorous look at a Viking marauder who has all the home and family problems of a typical modern suburbanite. Browne is one of the few cartoonists to have received the coveted Reuben Award for two different strips. Hagar won the National Cartoonists' Society award three times (1977, 1984, 1986). Browne retired in 1988, but one of his sons, Robert "Chance" Browne, continued to draw Hi & Lois, while another offspring, Chris Browne, kept drawing and writing Hagar. Fine condition.
