DILYS LAING
The famed poet and novelist sends letter critiquing a recent book she read, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Dilys" in black ink. 2 pages, 6x8. Norwich, Vermont. Novemeber 15, 1942. In full: "Dear Herb - How very nice of you to send the book! After reading Marianne Moore's review of it in The Nation & was very curious to see it. It is not a book upon which we can make a snap judgment but, but even on a first reading, one fact stands out, and that is that Villa is a True mystic. I'm afraid he is too much influenced by Cummings and Joyce, and I get sick of his use of the rose as a symbol. But many of the poems have a startling clarity and freshness of vision, and a few of them are verbally successful also. I am certainly very glad to see this work and to own the book. I do hope that we shall see something of you both now that Alex has finished his work. He will be starting on a new one soon, so we must try to do something with the interim! Many, many thanks, Herb". Dilys Laing (1906-1960)was an American poet. Born and educated in England, Laing married Dartmouth professor Alexander Laing in 1936; she worked as a writer, poet and artist, and her works are collected at Dartmouth College and in the Norton Anthology of Literature by Women. Her books include Another England (1941), Bouncing Bear: a Nursery Rhymer (1945), The Great Year: A Novel (1948), and Poems From a Cage: New, Selected, and Translated Poems (1961), and her published poems include "Eros Out of the Sea", "That time of year", "Men at Work" and "Let Them Ask Their Husbands". Normal mailing folds. Top and bottom edge frayed. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
