DIOSA COSTELLO
Signature of the "Latin Bombshell" nightclub star who got partner
Desi Arnaz into films
Signature: "Diosa Costello", in pencil, 5¾x3¾. A performer and
club owner, Diosa Costello (1913-2013. some sources give a later
birthdate, 1917), born in Puerto Rico but raised in New York City, became a
nightclub star in her adopted home town, billed as "the Latin Bombshell."
She sang and danced, while infusing elements of comedy into her routine.
For her show at the Conga Club, she partnered with Desi Arnaz, and
convinced the producers of the Broadway show Too Many Girls (1939) to add
him to the cast. Costello declined to appear in the feature film version,
preferring to perform for live audiences, but Arnaz went to Hollywood for the
film, and met Lucille Ball on the set. Costello toured with Chico Marx in a
revue, Curtain Time (1943), but her greatest fame came as "Bloody Mary"
in the original road tour of South Pacific (1950). Despite occasional
film roles, she preferred night club entertaining. Heavily toned. Binding holes
on left margin. Light surface creases. Ink notes (unknown hand). Edges slightly
worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
