A DOLL'S HOUSE: RUTH GORDON, KENT SMITH and OTHERS
Six of the players in the play A Doll's House sign a playbill from the production.
Playbill signed: "Ruth Gordon", "Kent Smith", "Sam Jaffe", "Margaret Waller", "Jessica Rogers" and "Frederic Tozérs", 20p, 6¾x9¼. Playbill for Jed Harris' production of A Doll's House at the Broadhurst Theatre, New York, beginning March 7, 1938. This play by Henrik Ibsen is a scathing criticism of the traditional roles of men and women in Victorian marriage. It was highly controversial when first published, as it is sharply critical of Victorian marriage norms. Ibsen has his protagonist, Nora, (RUTH GORDON) leave her husband in search of the wider world, after realizing that he is not the noble creature she has supposed him to be. Her role in the marriage is that of a "doll", her house a "Doll's House", and indeed her husband Thorwald (KENT SMITH) refers to her incessantly as his little "starling" and as his "squirrel". Lightly soiled. 2½-inch separation at bottom fold of cover (all intact). Overall, fine condition.
