Extremely rare signature from the music hall performing duo, with
Wood dating his signature for 1947
Signature: "Dolly Harmer", "Georgie Wood/1947", in blue ink,
3¾x3. English music hall star "Wee" GEORGIE WOOD (1894-1979) stood 4'9", went
on stage as a child and performed all his life in the role of a child. The
Beatles mention Wood on their album Let It Be (1970). After an improvised
passage, John Lennon says in a falsetto voice: "That was 'Can You Dig It?', by
Georgie Wood." His comedic partner and "stage mother", DOLLY HARMER
(1867-1956) performed with Wood for over thirty five years,
travelling across the world to with their shows. Their first role together was
in a play titled The Dummy in 1917, and they would become a
popular sight on the music hall venue, but even more popular when they performed
for troops. Harmer was a favorite among the soldiers, and earned the nickname
"The Mother of the Forces". One of their most popular sketches, The
Black Hand Gang, was turned into a film in 1930. Heavily toned.
Irregular left and bottom edge. Stains across top margin. Slightly soiled.
Crease on left margin. Adhesive residue and paper remnants on verso. Otherwise,
fine condition.
