DOLORES WILSON
A near-riot ensued when she replaced Maria Callas at a Met
performance.
Photograph signed: "Sincerely/Dolores Wilson/1980". B/w, 8x10.
Operatic soprano Dolores Wilson sang mostly on European stages, but also
appeared at New York's Metropolitan Opera, beginning in 1954. She was the
first to sing the title role in the American opera, The Ballad of Baby
Doe at the Central City Opera in Colorado (1956). She performed twice on
the Ed Sullivan show, and sang on Broadway in replacement roles (as Golde in
Fiddler on the Roof and Miss Hannigan in Annie) and original role
in The Yearling (1965) and I Remember Mama (1979). In 1956,
tempestuous diva Maria Callas, claiming illness, failed to appear for her final
Met performance in Lucia of Lammermoor. (She had quarreled at the
previous performance with co-star Enzo Sordello, whom she thought had tried to
show her up by outlasting her on a note.) When Dolores Wilson was announced as a
replacement, angry ticket-holders assailed the box office, demanding refunds.
The police had to be called. Fine condition.
