DONALD HARRON
The famous "Charlie Farquharson" actor is shown in this vintage 3½x5¾
candid photo standing beside a poster for Look Back In Anger, a play the
actor had a starring role in. The photograph is acquired from the collection of
Francis and Violet Zane
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Violet/Thanks/for
this/Don/Harron", in blue ink, B/w 3½x5¾. Donald Harron (1924-2015)
was a jack of all trades, working as an actor, director, comedian,
producer, journalist, author, and composer. He worked in stage, film, and
television, but was better known for persona "Charlie Farquhason", a
character Harron created to parody rural Ontario farmers. The character was a
popular sight in the television series Hee Haw (1969),
appearing on the show 82 times throughout its run. Harron also published
several books under his persona, including "Charlie Farquharson's Histry
of Canada" and "Charlie Farquharson's Jogfree of Canda, the Whirld and
Other Places". The actor mostly kept out of the public eye in recent years,
but appeared occasionally to reprise his Charlie Farquharson role, with his
performance in 2011 being the last ever performance of the popular character. He
is the father of the successful independent film director, Mary Harron. This
photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii
natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the
historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he
began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from
the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land
him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some
of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Some pieces of
image lightly lifted. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly bowed.
Otherwise, fine condition.
