DON LARSEN and YOGI BERRA
Classic photo of the catcher hugging the pitcher after he threw his World Series
perfect game, signed by both players
Photograph signed: "Don Larsen/ Perfect game vs/ Brooklyn Dodgers/ 10-8-56/ Game 5 of/
The World Series" and "Yogi Berra", both in blue felt tip, b/w, 8x10. Yankee pitcher DON
LARSEN (1929-2020) was immortalized thanks to his World Series perfect game,
thrown on October 8, 1956 (witnessed by 64,519 fans). This game continues to be the
only perfect game ever pitched in the World Series. Named the MVP of the series,
Larsen, who had been knocked out in the second inning of Game Two, started Game Five. The
Yankees would go on to become champs after beating the Brooklyn Dodgers by four games to
three. A capable but usually not overpowering pitcher who adopted a no-windup delivery,
Larsen won eleven games in 1956, his career high. A lifetime .242 batter, he had 14 career
home runs and was used 66 times as a pinch hitter. Larsen was also the last active former
St. Louis Brown. Shown here hugging Larsen on the mound after the historic triumph is
YOGI BERRA (1925-2015), who caught the game. A fine defensive catcher and handler of
pitchers, Berra was also a feared slugger and clutch hitter who led powerful Yankee teams in
RBIs seven years in a row (1949-1955) and was named AL Most Valuable Player
three times. Though famous for swinging at bad pitches, Yogi seldom struck out. He played
in a record 14 World Series - on the winning team a record 10 times - and made every
All-Star team from 1948 to 1962. As manager of the Yankees and later the Mets, Berra is
one of only three Major League managers (along with Joe McCarthy and Sparky
Anderson) to win pennants in both leagues. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1972. Berra is
also famous for enriching the language with puzzling expressions like "Ninety percent of this
game is half mental", "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded", and "It's déjà vu all over
again." Fine condition.
