NEW YORK BASEBALL GREATS OF THE 1950s BOBBY THOMSON and DON LARSEN.
Comprises (1)
Photograph signed: "Bobby Thompson". B/w9x6¾. Fine condition. (2) Photograph signed with souvenir inscription: "To Dale Mitchell/Better Luck Next Time!/Don Larsen". B/w, 9x6¼. Fine condition. THIS IS A SOUVENIR INSCRIPTION FOR A COLLECTOR; THIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS NOT GIVEN TO DALE MITCHELL AND WAS SIGNED SUBSEQUENTLY AFTER THE ACTUAL GAME WAS PLAYED. THOMSON hit what is perhaps the most famous home run in baseball history. His dramatic "shot heard 'round the world" on October 3, 1951, a three-run, ninth-inning homer off Brooklyn pitcher Ralph Branca, capped the Giants' historic comeback to win the NL pennant. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, the Staten Island Scot hit 24 or more homers six times in his seven full seasons with the Giants. Thomson had a comeback season for the Cubs in 1958, when he hit 21 homers and collected 82 RBI while batting .283. In 1969, Thomson was named to the Giants' all-time outfield. LARSEN had a mediocre career record, he was immortalized by his World Series perfect game of October 8, 1956. This is the only perfect game ever pitched in a World Series. He had gone 11-5 for the Yankees that year and, after being knocked out in the second inning of Game Two, started Game Five. He was a capable pitcher who adopted a no-windup delivery. His 11 wins in 1956 were his season high. He was the last active former St. Louis Brown. A lifetime .242 batter, he had 14 career home runs and was used 66 times as a pinch hitter. Two items. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 27x22½.
