DON MATTINGLY
Youthful image of the All-Star New York Yankee
Photograph signed: "Don Mattingly" in blue felt tip, Color 8x10. A 6-time All-Star
(1984-1989) and 9-time Gold Glove, Mattingly captured the AL batting title in 1984,
hitting .343, the first Yankee since Lou Gehrig to hit over .340. He was American League
MVP in 1985. The following year he set all-time Yankee marks for hits (238) and doubles
(53) in a season. Back injuries plagued Mattingly in the 1990s, derailing what had previously
looked like a Hall of Fame career. Don Mattingly's sister Dinah is married to basketball great
Larry Bird, a fellow Indiana native. He launched an innovative line of baseball and softball
equipment in 2005. Immensely popular with Yankee fans, Mattingly has a plaque in Yankee
Stadium's Monument Park. It reads, "A humble man of grace and dignity, a captain who
led by example, proud of the pinstripe tradition and dedicated to the pursuit of excellence,
a Yankee forever." A Yankees coach, but passed over for the managerial position, Mattingly
followed manager Joe Torre to Los Angeles, taking over as Dodgers manager in 2011.Fine
condition.
