Autograph letter signed: "Don McHenry", in blue ink, 2 pages,
5x7½ open flat, 5x3¾ closed. January 28, 1972. In full: "Dear John
Willis - As you suggested, here is my latest portrait [item not included].
May I add my congratulations to you for you valuable contribution to the
reaching of Theatre History? Theatre World is not only a necessary reference
work but is a fascinating and outstanding book to mouse through - Thank you for
it. All good thoughts for the future". Don McHenry (1908-1995) was a
longtime stage and television actor with a career spanning over thirty years. On
Broadway he appeared in many plays, including Medea (1947, 1949,
1982), The Crucible (1953), and King Lear
(1968). In television, McHenry had small roles on The Defenders
(1962) and The Adams Chronicles (1976). John A. Willis
(1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief
editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one
of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing
(and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the
nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which
received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues
under chief editor Ben Hodges. Fine condition.
