Price: $90.00
DON WHISTON. Photograph signed: "Don Whiston/Silver Medal/Oslo
1952". B/w with brown hue, 5x3½. Whiston has drawn an arrow to his
image. The 1952 U.S. men's ice hockey team, for which Whiston was the goalie,
came in finished behind Canada. The Bronze Medal went to Sweden. Don
Whiston, a native of Soneham, Massachusetts, was the first college goalie to
wear a face mask. Whiston, who played for Brown University and was voted the
No. 1 goalie in the Pentagonal league in the 1949-1950 season, had been
hit in the mouth by a puck during a game against Princeton, and he wore the
specially designed mask for the rest of his college career. In 1951, the year
before Whiston was a member of the Olympic team, Brown won the NCAA
championship and Whiston was named the tournament's MVP. Fine
condition.
