Postmarked Martinez, California, April 29, 1964. 5¢ stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Addressed to a collector in Alabama. Don (William Donlon) Edwards (1915-2015) was a Democratic congressman from California who served in the U.S. House for over 30 years. He earned his bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1936 and then went on to attend the law school at Stanford. From 1940 to 1941, he was a special agent for the F.B.I. During World War II, Edwards served in the U.S. Navy (1942-1945). After returning home, Edwards became president of Valley Title Co. He then commenced a career in politics, and after serving as a delegate to two Democratic National Conventions (1964 and 1968), he was elected to the 88th Congress and to the following 15 fifteen Congresses (1963- 1995). Edwards was appointed as one of the managers in two different impeachment proceedings conducted in the U.S. House. The first was in 1988 against Alcee Lamar Hastings, and the second occurred in 1989 against Walter L. Nixon. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
