DON WOODS
AFTRA membership application signed by annoucer Don Woods in
1959
Document signed "Don Woods" in blue ink. Lead pencil mark in
unknown hand and typed notations. 2 pages, 6½x9¼, 1 sheet, front and verso. With
6½x3¼ initiation fee receipt carbon copy with perforated left edge stapled at
top edge. March 9, 1959. Membership form for the American Federation of
Television and Radio Artists. According to this document, Woods was an announcer
who was scheduled to appear in a 1959 episode of You Asked For It. Ever
want to see what a million dollars in $1 bills looks like? Or a re-enactment of
William Tell shooting an apple off his son's head? Or a man wrestle an anaconda
(and nearly get killed in the process)? Before YouTube, your best bet was You
Asked For It (1950-1959). Hosted by show creator Art Baker and later by Jack
Smith, You Asked For It asked viewers to tell them what they wanted to
see on television, then showed it, either with live footage or film shorts. The
show also gave performances from entertainers like Gloria Jean, Buster Keaton
and Bela Lugosi, as well as an on-air reunion of the cast from Our Gang.
Lightly toned and creased. Form is lightly soiled, has light tear in right edge
and was folded twice and unfolded. Receipt has carbon copy marks and was folded
once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
This image has been censored to conceal personal information depicted
in the image. The actual document does not have these concealing
marks.
