Envelope signed: "Donald Thomas" in blue ink, 6½x3½. American astronaut Donald A. Thomas was born on May 6, 1955. He received a BS in Physics in 1977 and a Master of Science degree and Doctorate in Materials Science from Cornell University. He joined NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center as a Materials Engineer in 1988. He became an astronaut in 1991 and served as the spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM) for missions STS-47, STS-52 and STS-53. He logged over 1,000 hours in space as a mission specialist on STS-65 Columbia (July 9-23, 1994), STS-70 Discovery (July 13-22, 1995), STS-83 Columbia (April 4-8, 1997) and STS-94 Columbia (July 1-17, 1997). He was awarded the NASA Sustained Superior Performance Award, four NASA Group Achievement Awards, four NASA Space Flight Medals, two NASA Exceptional Service Medals, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
