DONALD B. MacMILLAN
ALS thanking a recent host
Autograph Letter signed: "D. B. MacMillan", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, 1926 May 9. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Thomson". In full: "Under separate cover I am sending you a photograph and my book 'Four Years in the White North.' [Items not included.] Had a wonderful time at your home as I did before and am grateful to you for the opportunity of meeting so many of your good friends." Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970) was with Robert E. Peary on the 1908-1909 polar expedition on which Peary became the first to reach the North Pole. MacMillan later led his own expeditions to Arctic lands, including studies of Greenland and Labrador for the Field Museum (1913-1937). He pioneered use of modern technologies - aircraft, radio and electricity - in polar regions. MacMillan carried out ethnographic studies of the Inuit people, even compiling a dictionary of their language. He detailed his travels in a number of books, including How Peary Reached the Pole (1934). Normal mailing folds, not affecting signature. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
