DONALD McHENRY. TLS: "Donald McHenry" as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, 1p, 8x10. [New York], 1979 December 20. To Paul Hanley, West Orange, N.J., about the hostage crisis in Iran. In part: "I share your deep concern about all our fellow citizens who are being held hostage at the American Embassy in Tehran. As you know, on December 4 the United Nations Security Council adopted by unanimous vote Resolution 457 calling for the safe and immediate release of the hostages...As President Carter has stated, the United States intends to pursue every peaceful avenue open to us to secure the safe release of all the hostages...." Iranian students seized the American Embassy on November 4, 1979, 46 days before McHenry wrote this letter. President Carter's failure to resolve the crisis contributed to his defeat in the 1980 presidential election. After the election, with the assistance of Algerian intermediaries, successful negotiations began. On January 20, 1981, the day of President Reagan's inauguration, the United States released almost $8 billion in Iranian assets, and the hostages were freed after 444 days in Iranian detention. Of the approximately 90 people inside the embassy on November 4, 1979, 52 remained in captivity until the end of the crisis. Donald McHenry represented the USA at the United Nations from 1979-1981. Fine condition.
