DONALD MEAKIN
The lieutenant colonel signs this letter acknowledging receipt of a letter and expressing concern about the procurement of Lord Mountbatten's signature for financial gain
Typed Letter signed: “Donald Meakin” 1p, 8x9½ affixed to a similarly-sized slip of paper. Letter written on official letterhead of the Life Guards Association. London, November 8, 1976. Printed text containing information about the Life Guards Association has been affixed to verso. To “Dear Mr. Croxford”. In full: “Receipt is acknowledged of your letter of 26th October enclosing a copy of our Menu for our Association's Dinner on 14th June 1975./ The signature you refer to of Admiral of the Fleet/ The Earl Mountbatten of Burma was not printed under the gloss finish of the card, but must have been written by him on menu card at the dinner for one of our members./ Lord Mountbatten is the Colonel of our Regiment and we are very honoured that he holds this appointment and also attends our Regimental functions. It is therefore most distressing to me to feel that one of our members has obtained the signature of our Colonel, not for his personal memento but for financial gain. Presumably the other signatures on the Menu Card of esteemed and honoured members of our Association do not fall into the same financial category./ Yours faithfully". Donald Meakin was a lieutenant colonel who served as the honorary treasurer of the Life Guards Association. Signer merits further research. Lightly toned. Staining at upper left-hand corner. Slip of paper to which the letter is affixed is irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
