New York, N.Y., 1965 September 1. On personal letterhead to "Dearest Joan". In full: "It was a comfort to discover that you didn't forget my birthday. When a person reaches my ripe age, he begins, more or less, to search desperately to make sure somebody still knows he's around. Thanks so very much and always, my affection." Handwritten postscript: "How very dear of you - Love". Playwright, screenwriter and producer Dore Schary (1905-1980) earned five Oscar nominations, including one win: Boys Town, Best Story (1938). He received three Tony nominations, also including one win: Sunrise at Campobello, Best Play (1958). Schary both wrote and produced the stage and screen versions of the latter. A staunch civil libertarian, Schary was chairman of the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League (1963-1969). Fine condition.
