Signed first edition of her novel The Fifth Child
Book signed: "Doris Lessing", 133 pages, 6x9. The Fifth Child, by Doris Lessing. (NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1988). First edition, hardcover with dust jacket. Doris Lessing (1919-2013) published her first novel, The Grass is Singing, in 1949, but her breakthrough novel, The Golden Notebook, appeared in 1962. Originally attracted to Marxism, she ultimately rejected the doctrine because it ignores the spiritual dimension of life. Her later works reflect her interest in Sufism. Lessing rejected a Damehood, but has accepted other honors from the Crown. In 2007 she became the oldest person ever to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Lessing has called The Fifth Child "a classic horror story," the story of a happy family whose life is disrupted by a fifth child, a monster in human form. Minor edge wear to boards. Fine condition.
