Signed paperback edition of her novel, Retreat to Innocence
Book signed: "Doris Lessing", 334 pages, 5½x8 paperback. Retreat to Innocence, by Doris Lessing. (Londen: Michael Jospeh/Prometheus Books, 1959). First Prometheus edition after the Michael Joseph second impression of 1956. Doris Lessing (1919-2013) published her first novel, The Grass is Singing, in 1949, but her breakthrough novel, The Golden Notebook, appeared in 1962. Originally attracted to Marxism, she ultimately rejected the doctrine because it ignores the spiritual dimension of life. Her later works reflect her interest in Sufism. Lessing rejected a Damehood, but has accepted other honors from the Crown. In 2007 she became the oldest person ever to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Retreat to Innocence was first published in 1956. Spine worn and creased. Edges and corners creased and worn. Ink marks and adhesive residue on front cover. Lightly soiled. Overall, very good condition.
