Beginning in the 1950s, Doris Roberts (1925-2016) earned credits in various stage and
screen productions. She had her first big role when she was cast as Donna Pescow's mother in
the series Angie (1979-1980). In 1983, she joined the cast of Remington Steele midway
through the show's run as an IRS investigator-turned-secretary-turned-detective, often stealing
the show with her low-key comedic work. In 1996, Doris Roberts became a star in the role
of Marie Barone in the series Everybody Loves Raymond, going from working actress --
which she'd been for more than 40 years -- to being an instantly recognized performer.
Her five Primetime Emmy wins (out of a total of eleven nominations) include four
victories for her work on Raymond and a guest appearance on St. Elsewhere in 1982.
Other screen credits include A New Leaf (1971), National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
(1989), and Aliens in the Attic (2009). Her 25-year career on Broadway included roles in The
Desk Set (1955-1956), Last of the Red Hot Lovers (1969-1971), and Cheaters (1978).
