DOROTHY BURGESS
Sultry 10¼x13¼ image of the actress by famed Hollywood photographer
Russell Ball, who has also signed. Burgess is a very rare signature!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "George dear -/so much
love/Dorothy/1930". Sepia, 10¼x13¼. Also signed by the photographer:
"Ball". DOROTHY BURGESS (1907-1961) made her stage debut in a
walk-on role in support of her aunt, Fay Bainter, and worked her way up from
specialty dancer roles to principal star of Los Angeles stages in productions
like Lulu Belle (1928) and Beyond Victory (1931). Often cast as a
Spanish temptress, she carried that role over into her first film, In Old
Arizona (1928). Soon she was starring in B-movies, and playing major
supporting roles in major films like Hold Your Man (as Jean Harlow's
rival for the affections of Clark Gable, 1931). Involved in a head-on auto
collision in December 1932, and in opposing law suits resulting from the
accident, she suffered a nervous breakdown. She appeared in films for another
decade, making her last in 1943. Burgess succumbed to tuberculosis at age 54.
RUSSELL BALL (1896-1942) was an independent photographer often hired by
the studios, well known for his original poses of Harlow, Garbo and other stars.
