Autograph Letter Signed: "Dorothy Canfield Fisher", 1 page, 6x7. Poughkeepsie, N.Y.,
undated. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Hathaway", in full: "I'd like very much to tell
you something about the remarkable character who was "Aunt Phoebe', but I am just now very
much submerged in delayed work. When would you need the material? Hastily yours". Dorothy
Canfield Fisher (1879-1958) wrote nonfiction under her married name (Fisher) and
fiction as Dorothy Fisher. Her fiction specialty was children's books, beginning with
Understood Betsy (1916). Her nonfiction including works on parenting - she was an
advocate of the Montessori Method; and biographies of Paul Revere and others, written for
young people. The Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award for the best new children's book is
selected by a vote of child readers. During World War I, Fisher worked in France with
blinded soldiers and orphaned children. Horizontal fold crease. Left corners creased and stained
