Scarce Photograph signed: "With every good wish/for 1961 and always/Lillian Gish" and "Every good wish/Dorothy Gish". With blue ink notations on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 8x9¼ overall 7¼x9¼ image. Embossed in lower right corner: "Avery Slack". LILLIAN GISH (1896-1993), the older of the Gish sisters, began her career as child actress "Baby Lillian" at the age of five. DOROTHY GISH (1898-1968), who often toured with her sister, and Lillian made their film debuts (along with their mother) in D.W. Griffith's film, An Unseen Enemy in 1912. Although Lillian was known as "The First Lady of the Silent Screen", Dorothy was an excellent actress in her own right, making more films than her older sister. Photographs signed by both Gish sisters are rarely encountered and extremely desirable. Lightly toned, cracked, chipped, creased and bowed. Pen skipped while signing Lillian's signature, but it is still legible. Light tears in left, right and bottom edges. Tape repair at bottom on verso. Upper corners are missing. Bottom corners are rounded. Tack holes in corners and top center margin. Impressions from notations on verso on image (not visible head-on). Adhesive residue and labels on verso (not show-through). Ink stamp "from the private collection of Harry Wilkinson".Harry Wilkinson, a noted collector, maintained the Hollywood Museum of Memories in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Otherwise, fine condition.
