5x3 card. British-born actress Dorothy Mackaill (1903-1990) got her
start in show business after running away from home at age 11 to act in the
London theatre. After working in choruses in England and France, she joined the
Broadway caste of The Century Revue in 1920, followed by Ziegfield's
Midnight Frolic. That same year, she made her first silent film, The Face
in the Window. She made her breakthrough to stardom in 1924, with leading
roles in The Man Who Came Back (opposite George O'Brien) and the
Western The Mine with the Iron Door. Her most notable talking film was
Love Affair (1932), opposite a young Humphrey Bogart. She retired
from movies in 1937, returning for a few roles in TV shows like Hawaii
