DOROTHY MANNERS
AFTRA membership application signed by columnist Dorothy Manners with her married name "Dorothy M Haskell" in 1966. She signed this form one year after becoming Hollywood columnist for the Hearst Corporation.
Document signed "Dorothy Manners" and "Dorothy M Haskell", bothin red ink. Blue and red ink notations in unknown hand and typed notations. 2 pages, 5¾x8½, 1 sheet, front and verso. With 6¼x3¼ initiation fee receipt carbon copy with perforated left edge stapled at top edge. Sept. 20, 1966. Membership form for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Manners signed this one year after becoming Hollywood columnist for the Hearst Corporation; she took over these duties from gossip columnist Louella Parsons. Manners signed this while married to her second husband John Haskell (1947-1977). Manners (1903-1998) was Hollywood columnist for the Hearst Corporation from 1965 to 1977. She got her start show biz in a few Hollywood movies in the late 1920s, mostly as an extra. Even she admitted that she was fairly unremarkable as an actress, though, so she instead became a journalist. After stints with the Los Angeles Times and Motion Picture magazine, she became gossip columnist Louella Parsons' assistant in 1935, a job she retained for the next thirty years. Manners took over when Parsons retired in 1965 and had her column syndicated through King Features. She was also a frequent guest on TV talk shows. Lightly toned and creased. Form folded twice and unfolded. Receipt has light nicks in top and bottom edge and carbon copy marks and was folded once and unfolded. Red ink stains on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
