DOROTHY SANDS
On the same letter used to solicit her, the prolific Broadway star sends her appreciation to John Wills, chief editor of Theatre World
Autograph sentiment signed: "My gratitude to you/Dorothy Sands" 8½x11. On official Theatre World (Screen World, Dance World) letter. Stage actress DOROTHY SANDS (1893-1980) appeared in no less than 36 Broadway shows between 1934 and 1970, including Papa Is All (1942), Quadrille (1954-1955) and Mary Stuart (1957) among dozens of others. Also a writer, Sands wrote the Broadway plays Styles in Acting (1932) and her self-titled one-woman show, Dorothy Sands (1933). She performed her last Broadway show, Paris is Out! in 1970, one decade before her death. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Corners and edges lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
