DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS. Photograph signed: "Douglas Fairbanks". Sepia, 6¼x8. Imprinted at lower left: "Douglas Fairbanks/as/'The Gaucho'". Fairbanks wrote the screenplay for and produced the 1927 silent, The Gaucho, in which he starred in the title role. His wife, "America's Sweetheart" Mary Pickford, made an uncredited appearance as Our Lady of the Shrine in the film. In 1927, Fairbanks and Pickford also appeared in the Russian film, Kiss for Mary Pickford, in footage that had been shot during their 1926 goodwill tour of the Soviet Union. While there, the couple toured movie studios and Pickford briefly took part in the making of a film that was incorporated into the Russian film. Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939), Mary Pickford (1892-1979), Charles Chaplin and D.W. Griffith had co-founded United Artists in 1919. In 1920, Pickford and Fairbanks, who were known as "Hollywood's King and Queen of the Silents", were married. Fairbanks starred in comedies and westerns in the 1910s and then in very popular swashbucklers during the 1920s. Pickford and Fairbanks separated in 1933 and divorced in 1936. Slightly soiled. Dampstained at upper right blank edge, which also has a stray ink mark. Overall, fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 13¾x20½.
