DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, SR. and JULES C. STEIN
Contract to rent a furnished ocean front home in Santa Monica from Hollywood super-agent Jules C. Stein. Fairbanks, in failing health, would live in this home until his death the following year.
Document signed: "Douglas Fairbank" as lessor, "Jules C. Stein" as lessee, 2 pages, 8½x13. Santa Monica, California, 1938 March 3. Signed on page 2, initialed twice by each on page 1. Fairbanks rents a furnished home at 706 Ocean Front in Santa Monica from Stein from April 15, 1938, to January 2, 1939, for a total rent of $10,000, paid in installments specified in the document. Fairbanks agrees not to sublet the property, and to repair at his expense any damage to the home and furnishings. DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, SR. (1883-1939, born Douglas Elton Ulman in Denver, Colorado) made his Broadway debut in Her Lord and Master. He married Anna Beth Sully, the daughter of an industrialist, in 1907, and left acting to work for her father's soap company. When his father-in-law lost his fortune in 1908, Fairbanks Sr. returned to the theatre. His son and namesake, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., was born the following year, and in 1915, the family moved to Hollywood. During a World War I Liberty Bond tour with Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford, Fairbanks fell in love with "America's Sweetheart." Having divorced Anna in 1918, Fairbanks Sr. married Pickford in 1920, and the couple settled in their Hollywood mansion, Pickfair. They reached the peaks of their careers in the 1920s. Pickford and Fairbanks separated in 1933, the year Pickford retired from acting. After their divorce in 1936, Fairbanks Sr. also retired. Fairbanks, in failing health, lived in the property at 706 Ocean Front (now Pacific Coast Highway) until his death in December 1939, when he was not traveling in Europe with his new wife, Sylvia, Lady Ashley. (Pickford had gotten Pickfair in the divorce settlement.) JULES C. STEIN (1896-1981), originally an eye surgeon, founded the Music Corporation of America in 1924. By the time he signed this lease, Stein had become a major Hollywood talent agent, representing not only musicians like Benny Goodman but also film stars like Bette Davis, Greta Garbo and Jack Benny. Stein became a major philanthropist, founding the Jules Stein Eye Institute. President Reagan was an honorary pallbearer at his funeral. Stein's primary residence, a Beverly Hills mansion, made headlines when it was purchased by Rupert Murdoch in 1986. Multiple mailing folds. Filing hole at top edge. Staples at top edge. Corners lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
