DOUGLAS MOORE
Douglas Moore sends an autograph letter of regret that he is not able to write an article as requested.
Autograph Letter signed: "Douglas Moore", 2p (front and verso), 6x7. Salt Meadow, Cutchogue, Long Island, New York, July 1, no year. On personal letterhead to Erno Balog, New York City. In full: "Your request for an article on Bartok comes at a bad time. I have to go to Sturbridge for rehearsals of the Devil & Daniel Webster next week. The performances begin July 18. Also I have not got the exact Columbia details here. If I can possibly get them and can find time to do a short piece I will, but I cannot promise to meet your deadline. With best regards, Yours sincerely". Fine condition. Accompanied by a matching, autograph envelope, unsigned, addressed by Moore to "Mr Erno Balogh, 50 W 67 St/New York 23", postmark illegible. Slightly frayed at opened top edge. Unevenly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.Douglas Moore (1893-1969) was an American composer, educator and author best known for his operatic works, especially The Devil and Daniel Webster (1938) and The Ballad of Baby Doe (1956). Many of his operatic and orchestral works were built on American themes: the Headless Horseman, Carry Nation, P. T. Barnum, Moby Dick. While a student at Yale, he composed some popular songs with classmate Archibald MacLeish, some of which were included in John Jacob Niles' Songs My Mother Never Taught Me (1921). Moore taught music at Columbia University for many years (1926-1952), once inviting Hungarian composer Bela Bartok to one of his seminars. Moore wrote several books. Salt Meadow was his family home on Long Island. Two items.
