DOUGLAS "WRONG WAY" CORRIGAN
1938 air mail envelope signed by legendary aviator Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan in 1940
Commemorative envelope signed: "Douglas Corrigan/6-27-40", 6½x3¾. Air mail envelope. Postmarked Antlantic City, New Jersey, Aug. 31, 1938. Addressed to Bill Schneider, Jr., Rahway, New Jersey. Two 3¢ purple-and-white "Landing of the Swedes and Finns" stamps affixed. After having been refused a license to fly to Ireland in 1937, on July 17, 1938, aviator Corrigan (1907-1995) left Floyd Bennett Airfield in New York City for California. 28 hours and 13 minutes later, he landed outside Dublin, Ireland, after "accidentally" going the wrong way. Corrigan's exploit made him a national hero, and he was known as "Wrong-Way" Corrigan. Lightly toned and worn at edges, otherwise in fine condition.
