DOUGLASS MONTGOMERY
Vintage photo, a serious looking image, inscribed in person to
collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Saul,/Thank you./Douglass
Montgomery". Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: September 4,
1935. An actor whose career might have been hampered by a succession of
screen names, Douglass Montgomery (1907-1966) was born Robert Douglass
Montgomery. On stage in his teens, MGM scouts nabbed him and changed his name
to Kent Douglass for films in the 1930s. A perfectly dashing, romantic
presence similar to Leslie Howard, the fair-haired young man played second
leads opposite some of MGM's powerhouse ladies, including Joan Crawford in
Paid (1930) and Katharine Hepburn in Little Women (1933). By
this time his moniker had been changed again to Douglass Montgomery; he was
loaned out to other studios for The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1935) and
Harmony Lane (1936), in which he portrayed composer Stephen Foster, and
Bob Hope's comedy classic The Cat and the Canary (1939). By WWII, his
career had waned and he enlisted with the Canadian infantry. He later starred in
a few British films. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by
day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with
many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman
presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen.
Corners worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, Fine
