Four pioneers in Medicine sign a First Day Cover honoring the centennial of the Smithsonian Institution.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Michael E. DeBakey", "Linus Pauling", "1-19.91/Denton A. Cooley MD" and "Jonas Salk", 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring the centennial of the Smithsonian Institution, 3-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., August 10, 1946, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. In 1932, cardiologist DeBAKEY invented a major component of the heart-lung machines that made open heart surgery possible. After winning two Nobel Prizes (1954 Chemistry, 1962 Peace), chemist PAULING studied the biological effects of vitamin C. Dr. COOLEY was a pioneer in open heart and heart transplant surgery. SALK developed the first polio vaccine. Lightly shaded. Fine condition.
