WALTER M. HOHLWEG
The famed endocrinologist signs commemorative first day cover celebrating the United Nations' International Women's Year in blue ink
First day cover signed: "Prof. Dr. Walter Hohlweg" in blue ink. 6½x3¾ commemorative envelope with FDC stamp, both celebrating the United Nation's International Women's Year, celebrating female equality. Postmarked May 9, 1975 in New York City. Professor Dr. Walter Hohlweg (1902-1992) was a famed endocrinologist, a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system and its secretions of hormones. After studying in Berlin throughout WWII, Hohlweg became a professor at the Humboldt University of Berline in 1952, and a decade later became head of the hormone laboratory at the University Hospital in Graz. His report titled "Hohlweg and Junkmann from the Main Laboratory of Schering-Kahlbaum" demonstrates their experiments that the gonadotropic function of the pituitary gland is controlled by a center in the central nervous system, which asserts their previously unknown connection. Furthermore, Hohlweg famously worked with Hans Herloff Inhoffen to develop effective oral estrogen which is still used in birth controls today. A prize is still awarded in Hohlweg's name every two years from the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Slightly toned. Corners rounded. Light surface creases. Small stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
